Recently though, we had this piping hot bowl of Oden - a stew of winter vegetables (also an added boiled egg is such a delight! 😁) at this cosy Japanese diner in the city. It is a one-pot meal which is served with an almost-boiling broth of dashi. The bowl has Carrot, Fried Tofu, Daikon (Radish), Potato, Hakusai (White Cabbage, also called Napa Cabbage) and Braided/Twisted Konnyaku (Its a type of noodle made using Yam, quite a unique texture). We have cracked two fabulous options for Shawarma! If you love yours, read on. In the quest to satiate a sudden craving for a good Shawarma a few weeks ago, we mindlessly punched in the keywords and browsed through Zomato and came across Arabian Al Baik. Without any expectations, we ordered a Shawarma (And also an Al fahm, but that’s a story for another day) We were regulars at Magic Chicken but the past few repeated incidents of average servings had left us disappointed. So, much like the MJ, we decided to expect disappointment to not be disappointed, because it was a new place. BUT. The Shawarma turned out MIGHTY impressive! Well-seasoned tender chicken, in roomali roti (you get to choose your bread), the garlic spread, forms the trifecta of awesomeness! We ordered nearly thrice in two weeks, because we just couldn’t recover from the satisfaction it offers! All #IPaidForIt. Also, if you are a garlic fan, you must order their mayonnaise. And, while eating this Shawarma, @rohanbhatt and I would sit and discuss the random details about a good Shawarma, when he suddenly has this Eureka moment to combine @bhullarskitchen 's Chicken Tikka and @tanoor.amd Khubus + Thoum and bring it all together for our own little version of Chicken Only Shawarma! And we did this exact same exercise. Our little experiment was highly successful! What a beauty. We are Team Chicken-Only Shawarma but Bhullar’s had sent some relish so we added that too. The generous @varunadugar11 sent across a Christmas Platter to us during the last week of 2021 and we still cannot recover from the spread! It was a fantastic beginning to the end of the year. It is no secret that @santeahmedabad is one of the countable places in the city which puts together fantastic platters! This one came with Three Dips: Guacamole, Spinach Hummus, Beetroot Hummus, and Cream Cheese with Caramelised Onions! Two Cheese Blocks : Lemon & Cranberry. Crudités, Variety of crackers - ragi, wholewheat, potato wedges, red grapes with golden dust to make it more festive, pesto cheese and olive bowl, and pop sized chocolate tarts. It had everything, and more. Our favourites: The caramelised onion with cream cheese and the cranberry cheese! What a stellar presentation with the Christmas Tree Shaped Wooden Platter. Most days @rohanbhatt and I are as clueless as every other person when it comes to 'what's for dinner'. But every now and then there are cravings so vivid and so specific that there is extreme clarity of what we want, how we want it. And to many, this effort to make that happen may appear ridiculous but to us it is simply working towards the ultimate satisfaction from food. In order to achieve that - we may combine complimenting/contrasting textures, flavours, cuisines, and even order from two different restaurants to make one whole meal. Recently, we craved for the Desi Chicken. For those who are unaware of this preparation - imagine a garlic heavy brown curry base which has been reduced from watery consistency to a consistency, which is somewhere between a tarri and a rich mughlai gravy simply by cooking the entire chicken in it. Yep. That! Instead of the usual naan, we decided to have this with Appams! De-bone the chicken into smaller shreds for best results and uninterrupted thulping. Take a bit of appam, let it drown and soak in the chicken curry and eat. It's a marriage of the ultimate flavours + textures. How the food tastes to you, is a true reflection of how you're feeling. And I felt the purest of the Joy while eating this meal. It was really late by the time I decided to eat, and the only place open was the staff cafeteria in the basement of the building that served one type of thaali. I walked the corridors and asked my way to this secret cafeteria. "Ek thaali 80 rupiya ni che, ema 2 shaak, dal, bhaat, rotli ane chhash aavse", the guy at the cash counter said. I wasn't hungry, I just needed to put some solid food in me to function optimally for the next day, so I told him - "Maney khaali 3 rotli, shaak ane chhash joiye che. Baaki badhu nai khavaay. Tamey poora 80 lai lo, pan maney khaali aatlu aapi do. Dal bhaat nai khavaay. Waste thai jashe" He happily agreed and I took my plate, a spoon and stood in line; served myself some sev-tameta-vatana nu shaak, 4 rotli and chhash. Walked to an empty table, sat and as if I was eating for the first time, I focussed on all the flavours, trying really hard to make sure I remember how everything on the plate tasted. The almost-silken, slightly-granular texture of the Mysurpa that melts away before you can get to biting this delicacy is the one true reason that sets it apart from its other peninsular cousins. The bright golden shades of Mysurpa have always intrigued me until I made it last year and figured that the beautiful colour gradient comes from the residual heat in the core of every piece of the Mysurpa.
