Foodaholics in Ahmedabad Food-a-holics There are food-critics, food connoisseurs, restaurant owners, home bakers,  home-makers, students, working professionals, parents, husbands who can cook to  wives who can’t, lovers trying to find that perfect place for a date to a  clueless someone with a ready-to-eat packet in their hands.

I have a request for you. Before you begin reading, go take a good look at the photo of the bread; a long stare at everything about the bread. Thanks for doing that. Now think about the first time you had a proper bread; and I don't mean the whole-wheat/multi-grain kinds. No. The good old bread that you pop into the toaster, take it out as soon as it gets golden brown and while it's still hot, get some room-temperature butter to evenly spread on it. And quickly take a bite of the crunchy-yet-super-soft-inside slice, hoping that it's still warm. This bread has a slight sweetness to it, which is just the right amount to balance out the hint of salt in the butter. If I had to recommend just one type of bread for the perfect toast (I LOVE my toast! incase, if it wasn't clear already..) it would be this one - The Shokupan. Shokupan, often mistaken for its sweeter cousin, Hokkaido, saw the light of the day around the 2nd World War. Scarcity of rice, influence of the Americans and an overall relaxed acceptance towards a foreign culture led to the introduction of this bread, which became a school-cafetaria staple in no time! Shokupan (Shoku, meaning Food & Pan meaning Bread) is a super-soft bread; the Japanese term for this kind of a texture is called 'Mochi-Mochi' (I immediately correlated it to Gujarati way of saying 'Pochi-Pochi bread' 🙈) The crust of the bread is very fragrant, owing to the eggs used in its making. @lily_pond_bakery in Ahmedabad, makes this bread on a specific day, every week and we can't thank them enough for doing so. We've been really curious about @sowhyte_ and after a few interactions, received (what seems like) their entire range of gourmet spreads. The rally of colours, alongwith the fine packaging was the first thing we noticed; little did we know, what was truly in store for us. We sat with the jars, a few dessert spoons, a cold brew (to reboot the tastebuds each time) and the excitement of a 5year-old! The unique flavours, each one of them, blew our minds. • Naturally-favoured butters • Peanut Butters • Jams • Chilli Oil • Marmalade On speaking with Shweta, the founder, we learnt that the butter is homemade and hand-churned from A2 milk. There is a lot of emphasis on the quality of ingredients used, which is evident in the taste, texture and mouth-feel of the products. And while the jars may convey a shelf-life of three months, once you do taste the butters, it might not last longer than a few days! A special mention to the chocolate peanut butter - it tastes exactly like Reese's (better, infact!) Can't wait to pair the Garlic and Herb Butter with a good french baguette! Japanese is one of the most rooted cuisines in the world and has now found a home in Ahmedabad. As you enter @bentob.restaurant , you're greeted with an ambiance (energy) that is all about minimalism and functional nature of the cuisine, yet the Manga art and the proud cookware on the walls will convey it's depth. Greeted with smiles, and the customary bow, we were seated, explained a little about the menu and were left to make our choices. The menu, while seeming small, does offer a whole lot of choices. Here's what we ate : AGEDASHI TOFU : Hot Tofu! Cubes of silken tofu, dusted with starch and deep fried, served in a tentsuyu broth. It is highly recommended you eat this hot. If you are someone (nudge-nudge!) who has to click it's picture, order 2 and eat one, instantly. TAMAGOYAKI: This Japanese rolled omelette has our hearts! Layers of fried egg rolled into a rectangular shape, further cut into pieces carries with it a hint of sweetness which will embrace you despite your scepticism for it. KATSU CURRY BENTO: The Box arrived at the table wrapped in Furoshiki, a traditional Japanese silk cloth used for wrapping gifts. Nice touch! The Katsu curry will feel closer home with its combination of curry powder, turmeric, coconut milk et al. The rest of the elements make for a complete, and balanced meal. SPICY MISO RAMEN: This ramen is calling out to all the deprived (no more) ramen lovers of the city. Packs the perfect level of heat, the miso is the star in this bowl. Therapeutic! GYOZAS: We opted for the pan-fried gyozas, because that's the way it is best enjoyed! OMU RICE: Fried Rice wrapped in Omelette and topped with house-made ketchup (the show stealer) is par excellent despite the simplistic nature of the dish. We made the maki-zushi which is when the nori-sheet (seaweed) is on the outside while the California roll has the sushi rice on the outside, because it is believed that the Americans were averted to seaweed and raw fish. Although, our choice of fillings are not exclusively traditional; First, we made a vegetarian variant and second we have used sauces/cream on the inside. This type is westernised and widely popular.
